RTKMAX is a service offered by Haselbach Surveying Instruments to GPS users in Northern California. RTK (Real Time Kinematics) corrections from our permanently mounted reference stations are provided to subscribers utilizing wireless technology and the Internet. RTKMAX takes advantage of continued improvements in GPS and communications technology. Combining advanced receiver technology, sophisticated processing algorithms and the latest in cellular technology so that survey grade accuracy is now achievable at ranges of 30 kilometers (about 20 miles) and more. Our twelve reference receivers, located in Sacramento,Stockton, and the Bay Area, compute RTK corrections once a second and make them available on the Internet. Rovers in the field receive the corrections through the use of a wireless modem, allowing them to perform GPS measurements without a local base station.

Eliminating the need for a local base station is a significant cost savings. More importantly, there is no longer a need to employ a "base station guard" to ensure that your expensive GPS equipment is not stolen or mishandled. Cost savings using a permanently mounted reference station can quickly exceed $500 per day.

Another important benefit of surveying in the RTKMAX footprint is that using GPS technology is much more simple. Field crews don't have to worry about where to put the local base station and are not concerned with UHF radios, cables and batteries. Finally, because our reference stations are part of the NGS' Cooperative CORS network the user can always trace his coordinate system back to NAD83 even if his deliverable is local coordinates!

RTKMAX coverage extends over a large part of Northern California and continues to grow. Your coverage is dependent on cellular coverage and the ability of your receiver to perform RTK at long range.

Most modern GPS receivers can be configured to work with RTKMAX. If your system can work with a cell phone as a data link it will probably work with RTKMAX. RTKMAX broadcasts the government designed RTCM format that is compatible with most receivers.

The raw data from our receivers is available free of charge. Simply click on the link on the map and you will be taken to a calendar page. Here you can choose the day for which you would like to download the data. The raw data is in RINEX format and is compressed for faster downloading.

Our users choose RTKMAX because:
  • It dramatically lowers the cost of implementing survey grade GPS technology.
  • It makes GPS easy to use
  • It is compatible with most modern GPS equipment
